Week in Review: 10/20/13

Movies I Watched This Week

1) Rec - I quite enjoyed the simplicity of this movie.  A confined setting, a couple of basic characters, a simple conflict, and then you insert zombies.  It's kind of the perfect recipe for a good horror movie.  Keep that in mind as you read on.

My Rating: 4 / 5

2) Rec 2 - I appreciated what they were trying to do in this movie.  Some of the stuff was really effective and creepy, like the "alternate universe that can only be seen with night vision" stuff.  I also didn't mind the twist on the zombies' origin so much, even though that could easily have gone sour.  But overall, it just kinda felt like they were trying to do too much with too little.  It could've used from some careful excision of certain details.

My Rating: 3 / 5

3) Rec 3 - This was kind of a step up from the previous movie just because they kept it simple in terms of plot and character, but the scope of the movie was a bit too grand.  I also didn't care for the way that tension was simply replaced by gore.  All that said, still kind of worth a watch.

My Rating: 3.5 / 5

4) Candyman - Yeah, I guess it was okay.  I wish I had more to say, but I kinda didn't have much of a reaction when it was all said and done.  I liked the ending, though.

My Rating: 3 / 5

5) The Intouchables - Not a horror movie, but I watched it anyway.  This is a good time - highly recommended if you're just looking for a sweet-natured comedy about an odd couple, and if you can stomach some mild racial insensitivity.  Though, this did give me a pretty good idea for a short comedy bit where there's like some beefy black guy trying to think of what to wear for Halloween, and somebody gives him a tie, and then he goes to a party full of white people and they all go, "Wow, that's a great Obama costume!"

My Rating: 4 / 5

6) The Evil Dead - Oddly enough, for as many times as I've seen Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness (which I also watched this week, but I'm not listing them because technically I watched the Rec movies the week before when I forgot to do a Week in Review, and also I try only to list movies I've seen for the first time in these updates), I've never seen the original Evil Dead until this week.  You know what?  It's a huge step down.  I did this the wrong way.  I'm impressed at how much gorier the original is, but not impressed in a good way.

My Rating: 2 / 5

Total: 6 Movies

Minutes I Spent Writing

1) The Search for David Wittmore - About 4 hours.

2) I Need A Job - About 3 hours.

Total: 7 hours

The Winner:  Minutes!

Overall, a pretty good week, despite missing my last Week in Review.  I Need A Job is getting much closer to a good draft to send out to the world, and I've almost kept up with the movie-a-day pace for October.  It's like both of my goals are coming true.
