Week in Review: 6/29/14

Movies I Watched in the Last Week

1) Sanctum - This has to be the worst thing that James Cameron has ever had his name attached to.  For anyone who thinks that Hollywood is the only system that can put out bland, predictable nothing, I give you Sanctum, a movie about a bunch of idiots who refuse to listen to experts that they hired to give them advice while making murder boring.

My Rating:  1.5 / 5

2) Taxi Driver - Believe it or not, I managed to go my whole life so far being a movie snob without actually watching Taxi Driver the whole way through.  I've just now rectified it... and, yeah, I guess it's pretty good.  A bit rough around the edges, though.  I think Scorsese must not have fully come into his own until a bit later in his career.

My Rating:  4 / 5

3) Austenland - I want to hate this movie more because it has so many pacing problems and just plain bizarre character interactions, but it got a few laughs out of me.  So I'll just call it "cute" and move on.

My Rating:  3 / 5

4) The Heat - They shouldn't have mentioned "Bridesmaids" in all the ad copy for this movie, because this is nowhere near as good.  I enjoyed watching it, but the differences between the two movies are huge.  There's a few points I'll want to make about this one later this week, so stay tuned for a more detailed write-up.

My Rating:  3.5 / 5

Total: 4 Movies

Minutes I Spent Writing in the Last Week

1) Born Loser - About six hours of writing.  Current draft length: 53,000 words.

Total: 6 Hours

The Winner:  Minutes!

I've surpassed the magical 50K word limit on Born Loser, so it feels like a legit use of my time now.  And I'm making some headway on the "I Need a Job" release, so life's feeling pretty good right now.  Overwhelming, but good.
