Week in Review: 11/1/15

Movies I Watched in the Last Week

1) Dark Was the Night - There were a couple of interesting moments, but this is largely just a snooze.  It's one of those movies that uses silence and slow pacing as a substitute for meditative tension, and they're not nearly the same thing.

My Rating: 2 / 5

2) The Nightmare - Although part of me wishes this was more of a straight-forward documentary, it was an effective horror movie with some of the creepiest and most unnerving things I've seen in a movie all year.  I liked it for what it was.

My Rating: 4 / 5

3) The Ouija Experiment - I may have to complain more about this some other time.  This is a perfect example of why you shouldn't try to get too "cute" when you make a movie.  When the director and cast just went to the basics and tried to make a stock horror movie, it actually had some decent scares and fun moments.  But when they were trying to be clever or funny, it was irritating as hell.  Not sure that I'd recommend it, but I wouldn't mind seeing a recut version with 50% less snark.

My Rating: 2 / 5

4) The Frozen - Like The Ouija Experiment above, this one gets a little too ambitious and takes something that should have been a basic and effective story about two people trying to survive in the wilderness and turns it into a big mess with cloudy themes about redemption, life, and death.  It's too claustrophobic, too confused, and too aggravating to get into.

My Rating: 1.5 / 5

5) Firestarter 2: Rekindled - I watched this for my side blog.  Not terribly made, but way too damn long.  Next time somebody decides to release a super-edit of a miniseries as a "movie," they need to prune some of that crap out.

My Rating: 2 / 5

6) Children of the Corn V: Fields of Terror - I watched this for my side blog.  It's a by-the-book horror movie, but I kinda had fun with its stupidity.

My Rating: 2 / 5

Total: 6 Movies

Minutes I Spent Writing in the Last Week

1) Bitter People Without Souls - About 2 hours of proofreading.

Total: 2 Hours

The Winner: Movies...

So, another October has come and gone.  Considering that I didn't get very much writing done, I'm disappointed that I didn't watch more horror movies.  Spent too much damn time working on my music collection.  I'll have to complain about that tomorrow.
