Movies I Watched in the Last Week
1) The Martian - I'm waffling on whether or not to give this a perfect score, which is basically another way of saying it might as well get a perfect score. I loved this movie. Not only does it captures so many emotional highs and lows, unexpected challenges, and interesting solutions to problems, it also plays fair with conflicting opinions and approaches to a multi-layered situation. I appreciated that the one guy who could conceivably be called a "villain" isn't really a villain; he's just approaching the solution from a point of view that frustrates the others. It's a great movie because everybody is actually on the same team, and yet they still have seemingly insurmountable odds. Definitely watch it if you're one of those guys like me who had to pass when it was in theaters.
My Rating: 4.5 / 5
2) Don Verdean - This movie seems to have slipped under everybody's radar. Or maybe I'm just the only one who's interested in what Jared Hess has been up to. Anyway, it's easily the best thing he's done since Napoleon Dynamite and it deserves to be watched. I think I'm going to have to do a more in-depth write-up later.
