Movies I Watched in the Last Week

1) The Equalizer - I loved this movie more than I probably should.  The characters are all flat archetypes, the plot is as cliched and rote as they come, and the politics are skeevy at best.  But my God, the action scenes and sneaky stuff that Denzel does are so badass.  I didn't want it to end.  This is the kind of movie that has so much confidence in its protagonist's badassery that you feel it oozing off the screen.  It eventually gets to a point where it doesn't even have to show you what Denzel is doing - it just shows you little snippets of the aftermath, like a broken pair of sunglasses, and you'll clap and go, "Holy shit he did it again!!!!"  I'm giving this a high rating purely on that feeling.

My Rating: 5 / 5

2) Big Game - There are enough fun moments in this movie to make it worth your while, so I'll put this on the low end of a "good" rating.  The problem is that there isn't enough actual content once it gets into the second and third acts.  Over half the movie is spent either on setting up the conflict or on the characters standing in bad-ass poses and trying to say cool lines.  I've got nothing wrong with bad-ass poses and cool lines as long as they pay off with bad-ass actions and cool set-pieces.  Too much of it feels like there was a really awesome movie they were going to make, but they couldn't afford it, so you have to settle for watching what they did make.

My Rating: 3 / 5

Nothing.

The Winner: Movies...

Spent this last week getting ready for the next baby.  Have I mentioned yet that we're expecting another baby?  I feel like this is pretty big news that I'm being way too calm about.
