Movies I Watched in the Last Week
1) Miracle Mile - I'm simultaneously A) fascinated by this film's set pieces (including a really well-shot and blocked chase during the final riot scene) and its sincere love story, and B) put off by the cynicism that beats at its core. It's very hard for me to take in stories from the Cold War that have a grim outlook on humanity and to then separate that nihilistic spirit from the work as a whole. My generation grew up with a lot more positivity, and it puts a strange cloud on stuff like this.
Knowing the context, I can give it a break and give it a higher score. Taken out of context, I don't know that I can buy into the joy and quirkiness of the characters when the rest of the movie is basically shrugging and going, "The world sucks, amirite?"
My Rating: 4 / 5 if I view it with historical appreciation, 3 / 5 otherwise
2) The Thin Man - What do you know, a classic film beloved by at least four generations is pretty good. There's literally nothing I can say about this that would be news to anyone except that I really dug it and I'm looking forward to watching its sequels.
My Rating: 5 / 5
