Week in Review: 12/11/16

Movies I Watched in the Last Week

1) Curious George - You know what's really good about the way I calculate stats in these week-in-review write-ups?  I only count each movie once.  If I had to count every single time Lulabelle pulled this one up in the last week, my movies-to-minutes ratio would be devastated.  Anyway, this is a cute and charming movie.  It's not very funny or engaging for adults, but it neither has to be nor should.  It's just a sweet, innocent little cartoon for kids with no underlying detachment or cynicism, and that's very refreshing.

It also glows.  A lot.  You'd have to watch it to see what I mean, but it's like every cell was sprayed with turtle wax before they converted it to film.

My Rating: 4 / 5

2) Curious George 3: Back to the Jungle - We missed the second installment of this series due to it not being available on Netflix (at least, not from what I can see).  So, you'll have to forgive my lower-than-average rating if it turns out it's marred by the lack of continuity.  It's a totally fine direct-to-video/VOD animated movie, but it doesn't have nearly the same charm as the first one.  Lulabelle loved it all the same and has given it repeat viewings, but this is the one that I walk away from to go do dishes.

My Rating: 2.5 / 5

3) Yo-kai Watch: The Movie - I kinda dig this series overall.  I don't know if I'm off-base, but Yo-kai Watch feels like an anime series for people who have a hard time taking anime seriously.  It's frenetic, goofy, occasionally really clever, and sometimes unexpectedly sweet.  How does the movie hold up?  Well... the first chunk of it just feels like an extended episode of the show, and that's totally fine.  Then it tries to become a Big Epic Movie and it feels bloated and saccharine.  I'll call it a wash.

Frankly, an opinion on this is kinda meaningless.  If you're already a fan, you know you're going to check it out, anyway, and you'll probably enjoy most of it.  If you're not a fan, there's nothing here for you and you won't really get half of what's going on, so you'd have to watch the show, anyway.

My Rating: 3.5 / 5

Total: 3 Movies

Minutes I Spent Writing in the Last Week

1) Post Apocalyptic Comedy Novel - About 4 hours writing the first draft.  Current draft length: 63,000 words.

Total: 4 Hours

The Winner: Minutes!

I'm giving myself even odds of wrapping up my novel before the year's over.  Here's wishing myself a ton of luck.
