Movies I Watched in the Last 2 Weeks

1) Arrival - Whereas the rest of the Internet loved and raved about this movie, I merely enjoyed it a lot and think people should make a point to see it.  I have quibbles, minor and not worth getting into, that prevent me from stamping it with the Perfect Movie seal of approval.  Still, it's a damn good science-fiction film with an intriguing take on communication and culture.

My Rating: 4 / 5

2) Shallow Grave - This is a terrific low-key thriller.  I would have liked it a tad more if the ending had just a shade or two darker schadenfreude.  Nevertheless, it's great and it makes sense that it would jump start the careers of both Danny Boyle and Ewan McGregor.  I feel like if I ever went to film school, this would have been one of those movies on the curriculum that I was actually excited to see and revisit later.

My Rating: 4 / 5

3) The D Train - It's not my cup of tea.  I can see some legitimate drama here and maybe even some comedy, but it didn't quite hit home for me.  I think the main stumbling for me is that Jack Black's character's inner conflict is so ubiquitous and relatable, yet it is overshadowed completely by simple dumbfuckery and, eventually, unexpected sexual urges.  I was really hoping this would be an understated dramedy about the reluctance everybody feels with change and the shades of depression you go through when you feel like you've never actually progressed despite said change.  The movie starts with the pitch perfect tone of malaise that you feel when you look in the mirror and say to yourself, "I haven't actually learned anything at all - have I?"  That could be the perfect jumping off point for so many great stories.  And then it just turns into a weird cringe-comedy about obsession.  Sigh.  Not for me.

My Rating: 2.5 / 5
