Week in Review: 5/28/17

Movies I Watched in the Last Week

1) The BFG - I was shocked to learn, after watching this movie, that it was directed by Spielberg.  Normally he brings a bit more "magic" to the table, but I felt like any charm that's in this movie is a testament to Roald Dahl, whose spirit somehow survived what was otherwise an assembly line adaptation.  Not to say that's a bad thing, just that it's nothing special.

My Rating: 3.5 / 5

2) The Lure - In some ways, this is the inverse of The BFG.  It's also a special-effects heavy, partially-comedic, partially-horrific movie about mythical creatures, but where The BFG follows a fairly standard formula, The Lure does pretty much whatever the hell it feels like at any minute.  If I'm being honest, I don't think I fully understood it.  I'm not even sure I really, um, "liked" it.  But I was invested and appreciated all the strange beauty, so that's worth at least an equal rating to Hollywood pablum that made me shrug.

My Rating: 3.5 / 5

3) Horton Hears a Who - This movie bounces back and forth between loyal adaptation and cringe-worthy comedy dribble so rapidly that I wasn't sure I'd give it a pass until well over halfway through.  I don't get it.  Why do you bother to add bullshit like dated jokes and impressions that kids probably won't even understand when your story is already marketable and likeable?

My Rating: 3 / 5

4) Chicken Little -  Ugh. See my comment above about dated jokes and bad impressions, but ramp that up by a few magnitudes.  I don't understand how a movie this bland ever makes it past the brainstorming phase.

My Rating: 2 / 5

5) Don't Think Twice - I liked it.  Longer review in progress.

My Rating: 5 / 5

6) Bad Moms - It's basically a generic guys-in-the-suburbs comedy, but about moms instead.  Not bad.  I'd be lying if I said it was innovative, but it's much better than its premise - and title - would suggest, and the entire cast is amazing.

My Rating: 3.5 / 5
